PRESENTER: Jeffrey Fishbein, AIA, Associate,
Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects
Jeffrey is a design-driven experienced Project
Architect with an expertise in higher education
facilities, renovation and adaptive re-use. Prior to
joining Leers Weinzapfel much of his work focused
on the renovation of architectural landmark
buildings including the MIT Baker House Dormitory,
and Memorial Hall at the Rhode Island School of
Design (RISD). He also served as Project Architect
for MIT’s Simmons Hall Dormitory, and the RISD
Museum Addition and New Campus Center. He
has worked on higher education projects at
Harvard University, Agnes Scott College, Boston
College, Furman University, Wesleyan University,
and Norwich University. At Leers Weinzapfel
Jeffrey has worked as the Project Architect for the
University of Connecticut Oak and Laurel Halls
Classroom Building, the Greenfield Trial Court, and
the Integrated Design Building at the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst. Currently, he is Project
Manager for the new Multi-purpose Academic
Building at the Wentworth Institute of Technology.
DESCRIPTION:Jeffrey will present aspects of the
design and construction of the UMass Amherst
Design Building and discuss what drove the decision
to use wood (specifically, mass construction timber)
as the structural system for the project. He will talk
about the project’s background, context and design
concept, walk us through the decision-making
process of wood vs. steel and relate how code and
budget concerns were me
